Viewpoints on Gun Control in the US
by M Wolber   Apr 18, 2007

It's hard not to have an opinion either way on this one. With the recent shootings in Blacksburg Virginia, this topic is being brought up once again in media circles. Do we need a change in our gun laws? Would a law change help law abiding citizens while keeping guns from criminals and psychopaths? What are your thoughts?

Tough problem! I don't know what laws would help. Look at
the tough gun control laws of Japan where law abiding
citizens don't have guns- just the criminals do. That
doesn't sound like a very safe alternative. The numbers are
pretty low as to how many legal carriers of firearms commit
crimes with their gun. According to guncite.com....

There are approximately two million defensive gun uses
(DGU's) per year by law abiding citizens. That was one of
the findings in a national survey conducted by Gary Kleck, a
Florida State University criminologist in 1993."

...That's a lot of law abiding citizens defending
themselves, their family and others. This right to self
defense should never be taken away IMO.

....sorry I didn't offer more solutions.

How can you put laws on psychopathic behavior? This kid in
VA. was in a mental hospital for a while and deemed
dangerous to self and others. He was able to buy a gun with
a fake id from what it sounded like. So if we take it to one
extreme and ban all gun sales to citizens, there would still
be guns- only the criminals and LEO's would have them. Does
that make anyone feel safer? I think a law like that would
be about as successful as our war on drugs and our war on
terror. Oooff.... not another one of those I hopse! However
with that said, not everyone should be able to own a gun and
I think the law takes care of that pretty well in a lot of
states.

Gun control- Shmum control. Criminals get guns no matter
what. Those that abide by the rule get a license. Who is
doing the damage out of those two groups?? Guns will always
be available, as will drugs. Control? I don't know where to
start, but un-arming law abiding citizens is not the answer.
Realize that laws will not shape the criminal. Duh! The
fact is that this happened on a property that dis-armed
victims. No person out of the whole campus- victims
included, stopped this ONE guy with a 9mm and a .22. ...the
basic instinct to survive wasn't even there when a whole
classroom of people could not plan to take out one guy on a
rampage with a handgun. ......there is a lot to think about
there. I wasn't at the school and can't imagine what went
down. ...BUT....had I come across this shooter while I was
armed, I would've put my life, as well as my financial risks
for lawyer fee's and all that is involved with using a
firearm up for grabs. Not everyone should carry a gun, but
not everyone should allow themselves to become a victim by
relying on our current safety net. ...Criminals will stop
shooting when they know law abiding citizens might shoot
back. Banning firearms= un-arming victims that choose to
fight back against criminals that WILL get guns regardless
of the law. It's a pretty simple concept.

Guns don't kill people, idiots do. You can just as easliy
take out a room full of people with a sword if you charged
correctly. Outcome is the same, and still the criminal is
armed- not the victim. If everyone has a means of self
defense, you'd see a lot less of this shit nowdays!
